Resume
I am Patrick Cable. I live slightly north of Boston, Massachusetts these days. I am a System Administrator, occasional photographer, occasional (graphic) designer and very occasional writer.
System administration is design work (in the artistic sense) for me. This means: a lot of of conceptualizing, a lot of understanding what the customer wants, and a lot of “taking it apart, moving it around, and putting it back together differently.”
Happiness is: having a system that does what the customer wants with an architecture that makes sense. Happiness is also good beer.
More or less: I make Unix/Mac/Windows computers do really cool things.
I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Network and Information Systems. I am currently working towards my Masters of Science in Network and System Administration at Rochester Institute of Technology. I’ll let you know how it goes.
I’m primarily interested in Virtualization, Linux/UNIX Administration, and Network/Systems Architecture. I can speak PERL, PHP, and I am familiar with BASH scripting. I dabble in TCSH as well. As far as hardware goes, I currently manage Equallogic, EMC, and NetApp storage arrays, Cisco and Juniper switching equipment, Apple laptops and desktops, and Oracle/Dell Servers. On the software end, I currently manage my network’s VMware vSphere 4 implementation. I’m familiar with maintaining Oracle’s Solaris Cluster and their Grid Engine offering as well.
I am familiar and comfortable with all versions of Microsoft Windows (but believe that Windows 7 is the way to go if you’re in the Microsoft camp), and Mac OS. I am primarily a Linux/UNIX administrator, and am most familiar and happy using Solaris, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Debian Linux, and Ubuntu Linux, in no particular order.
I currently work a research laboratory that is operated by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to that, I owned an IT consulting firm called Cable Consulting and had a wide range of clients, from home users to businesses and municipalities. My start in the world of system administration was as a “Media Technician” at an elementary school in southern Massachusetts—if it had a plug and wasn’t owned by the facilities maintenance team, it was mine to work with.
During undergrad, I was a orientation leader for two years, worked behind the scenes for a year as an orientation assistant, and was the staff coordinator my last year. As staff coordinator, I was responsible for developing and executing a training program for new and returning student orientation staff. I also served on my school’s Community Standards Board for three years - if you were wondering it was both humorous and educational.
I like to remain involved professionally. I’m on the program committee for LISA ‘12, and I did the work involved with getting BBLISA turned into a local LOPSA chapter. With LOPSA, I’m involved with the mentorship program as a mentor.
I’m always interested in what other people are doing with technology, though to be up front: I am not seeking employment at this time. If for whatever reason you would like a more formal resume, my address is: my two initials at first initial followed by my last name dot net
